Bears Come Out Flat Week 1 vs Browns

Myles Garrett’s strip sack fumble recovery on Fields early in the 1st Quarter makes for a long afternoon for Fields and the Bears.

The Bears came out flat Week 1 and just didn’t meet the Browns intensity. Fields looked like a deer in headlights while the Browns’ relentless pressure forced Fields into throwing 5 interceptions in his first career start at home. After the game the Chicago media spoke with Coach Shadez…

Bears Media Host: Coach Shadez will take a few questions…

Mike Mulligan (670 Score): Coach, why did rookie LT Jenkins get the nod over the veteran LT Peters knowing Garrett’s relentless pressure and big play potential?

Coach Shadez: We felt Jenkins gave the quickness to keep up with Garrett’s first move. It was definitely a learning experience for our rookie LT. We should have probably gave him some help and slid our protection over to Garrett more than we did in this game. Hats off to Garrett, he’s a special player and made some special plays today. Fields will grow from this. We expected him to turn the ball over early on. As he gets real game reps he’ll adjust to the speed of the game and hopefully make better decisions with the football.

Brad Biggs (Chicago Tribune): As bad as your offense was today, the defense gave up 200 yards on the ground. What went wrong on defense today? Mainly with the frontline…

Coach Shadez: Cleveland did a great job neutralizing Mack. Our defense begins with him. We brought in some players with size hoping to clog the running lanes but the Cleveland offensive line was able to generate a really good push upfront. We had some nice plays by Quinn but he was pretty much the only one to show up today for us. We expected the Browns to pound the football today. What we didn’t expect was the number of outside runs they would run. Our defensive front has to set the edges. We failed to do that today.

Jeff Dickerson (ESPN): Coach, next weeks opponent has another stud DE in Bosa. How will you try to neutralize him and will Jenkins get the nod at LT?

Coach Shadez: We’ll be prepping for next week starting tomorrow. I’m not going to give up any hints as to who will be playing where but we’ll definitely look to help our offensive line on Bosa. We did some good things today on the ground offensively and I thought Cole Kmet had a really nice game for us but we just need to take better care of the football is what it comes down to. We’ll look at today’s film and see where we can grow as a football team and learn from our mistakes. The season is young and I have faith in this coaching staff that we’ll get it right. Thanks, guys.

Bears Media Host: That’s all the questions for today. Thank you and see you all next week.
